FROM   THE    PRESIDENTS    PEN  .  :

 

Dear  Worthy  Brethren  and  Brethren ,

 

The  Festival  of  Shavuot ,  also  known  as  Pentecost  or  Feast  of  Weeks ,  was  celebrated 

primarily  as  a  Thanksgiving  for  the  wheat  harvest .  It  falls  seven  weeks  after  the  barley  harvest ,  when  an  Omer  of   the  new  produce  was  offered .  Beginning  with  the  second  day  of  Pesach ,  seven  weeks  ( 49 days )   were  carefully  counted ,  and  the  fiftieth  day  was  celebrated  as  the  beginning  of  the  wheat  harvest ,  or  Festival  of  the  First  Fruits .  The  Torah  refers  to  Shavuot  as  Chag  Hakatzir ( The  Feast  of  Harvest )  and  Yom  Habikurim ( The  Day  of  the  First  Fruits ) ,  observed  by  offerings  of  the  best  ripe  produce  of  the  fields .

 

The  Torah  also  goes  on  to say ,  that  You  shall  keep  the  Feast  of  Weeks  in  honour  of  the  Lord ,  your  G-d ,  and  the  measure  of  your  offering  shall  be  in  proportion  to  the  blessing  that  the  Lord  has  bestowed  upon  you .  You  shall  rejoice  before  the  Lord ,  your  G-d ,  with  your  son  and  daughter ,  your  male  and  your  female  servants ,  as  well  as  the  stranger ,  and  the  fatherless ,  and  the  widow  among  you .

 

It  is  customary  to  eat  dairy  dishes  on  Shavuot ,  symbolizing  the  Torah which  is  likened   to  milk  according  to  the  allegorical  interpretation  of  the  Song  of  Songs -    Honey  and  milk  are  under  your  tongue .

 

We  are  presently  experiencing  one  of  the  most  difficult  times  in  the  history  of  our  beloved  country ,  and  it  is  essential  in  these  times  that  we  bond  and  stand  together ,  for  in  unity  we  find  strength .  In  our  own small  way  we  can  play  our  part  by  fulfilling  one  of  the  basic  concepts  of  our  Order ,  by  displaying  what  has  been  sorely  lacking  in  our  Lodge ,  and  that  is  the  true  spirit  of  Chaverschaft .

 

What  better  time  than  now  is  it  for  each  and  every  one  of  us  to  embellish  this  concept  by  inviting  at  least  one  Brother  and  his  wife  into  your  home  to  strengthen  the  ties  between  us ,  and  by  so  doing , not  only  will  we  be  honouring  the  spirit  of  Shavuot ,  but  at  the  same  time ,  enhancing  the  concept  of  true  fraternity .  I  appeal  to  each  of  you  to  display  your  loyalty  to  the  Order ,  and  your  Lodge ,  by  making  the  effort  to  perform  and  fulfill  this  simple ,  yet  meaningful ,  task .

 

With  these  few  thoughts ,  I  take  this  opportunity  of  wishing  you  all  a    Chag  Shavuot  Sameach .

       ·            Freda  Lanesman , wife  of  Worthy  Brother  Ralph ,   who  recently  had  a  Hip  Replacement  Operation ,  and  is  now  recuperating  at  home .

SAVING   COSTS  :

We  are  constantly  looking  for  ways  to  cut  operating  costs ,  and  so  leave  more  funds  for  distribution  to  our  worthy  causes . Our  Management  Committee  has  decided  to   send  our  Newsletter   on  a  trial  basis  over  the  next  few  months ,  by  Electronic  Mail  Format  to  all  those  Brethren  who  have  E-mail ,  either  at  home  or  in  the  office .

At  present  we  have  approximately  50  (Fifty )  E-mail  addresses  of  Brethren ,  and  would  like  to  hear  from  other  Brethren  if  they  have  an  E-mail  facility  to  receive  the  Newsletter  in  a  Word   format .

The  more  Brethren  who  are  able  to  receive  our  Newsletter  by  E-mail ,  the  lower  our  printing  and  postage  costs  will  be .

This  month ,  we  will  be  sending  our  Newsletter  to  those  Brethren  with  E-mail  addresses ,  as  well  as  a  printed  copy .  As  from  next  month ,  we  will  only  send  out  printed  copies  to  those  Brethren  who  do  not  have  an  E-mail  facility .

VICE  -   PRESIDENTIAL   COMMENT  :

  

Dear  Worthy  Brethren  and  Brethren ,

 

As  previously  stated ,  the  following  matters  were  discussed  and  decided  at  the  Management  Committee  Meeting ,  held  on  Wednesday  8 th.  May ,  and  will  be  submitted  to  the  Open  Lodge  Meeting  for  further  discussion  and  confirmation .

  (  1. )  Memorial  Meeting  :  A  Memorial  Meeting  in  honour  of  our  departed  Brethren  will  be  held  at  an  Open  Lodge  Meeting  during  the  month  of  Tishri ,  or  as  near  as  possible  to  Yom  Kippur ,  depending  on  the  date  of  our  Open  Lodge  Meeting .

 (  2. )   Combined  Annual  Installation:  A  request  from  Grand  Lodge  that  the  Combined  Annual  Installation  for  the  year  2003 /  2004 ,  be  held  on  May 18 th., 2003 ,  as  this  is  the  only  date  convenient  for  the  Grand  President .  The  Management  Committee  has  accepted  the  request ,  subject  to  confirmation  by  the  Brethren  present  at  the  Open  Lodge  Meeting .

 ( 3. )    Insurance :   A  renewal  for  our  Third  Party  Liability  Insurance  has  been  received ,  reflecting  a  substantial  increase  on  the  last  premium .  It  was  decided  to  renew  the  policy .  Worthy  Brother  Treasurer ,  Alex  Tolkin ,  was  requested  to  ask  the  Insurer  if  the  premium could  be  reduced .

 ( 4 . )   Fund  Raising :  Worthy  Brother  Max  Geffen  suggested  that  we  work  in  conjunction  with  Beit  Issie   Shapiro  for  our  major  Fund raiser  for  this  year .  The  idea  is  to  send  out  a  book   entitled    My  Guide  to  Jewish  Knowledge ,  by  Rabbi  Joseph  Fogel ,  to  a  mailing  list  of  approximately  2500  people .  The  mailing  will  be  to  ( a )  The  mailing  list  of  the  H.O.D.  International ;  ( b )  The  Beit  Issie  Shapiro  Mailing  list ;  ( c )  Local  Bowling  Clubs  mailing  lists ;  ( d )  Books  to  be  accompanied  by  a  letter  explaining  the  purpose  of  the  Fund raising  ;  ( e )  I  must  emphatically  state  that  Rabbi  Fogel  will  be  receiving  no  material  benefit  whatsoever ,  from  the  project .  (  Rabbi  Fogel   is  a  Brother -  a  member  of  H.O.D.  Lodge  Lishkat  Hasharon .)  ;  (  f  )   More  specific  details  will  be  given  at  the  Open  Lodge              Meeting .
