FROM
THE PRESIDENT’S PEN ……
The post-biblical festival of Hanukah commemorates the heroic struggle of the Jews against the pagan forces at the time of the religious persecutions by the Greco-Syrians, a struggle which proved decisive in forming the character of the Jewish people. The great Maccabean victories eventually led to the religious freedom and national independence of the Jews, inspiring many subsequent generations to face persecution with triumphant courage.
The story of Hanukah served as encouragement to many a small group to fight against oppression and injustice. It was very much a source of inspiration in the movement to liberate Eretz Yisrael and establish it as an independent State of Israel. It also stimulated the Jew to withstand assimilation in the midst of an overwhelming majority, and to stress Jewish culture in the face of a vast culture that seeks to engulf him.
The lighting of the candles on the eight days of Hanukah, one on the first day with the addition of one on each succeeding days is linked to the miracle of the cruse of oil. When the Hasmoneans prevailed over the heathen enemies, they found only one undefiled cruse of oil with the seal of the high priest intact. The cruse contained only sufficient oil for lighting the Temple Menorah for one day, yet, miraculously its oil burned for eight days.
The lighting of Hanukah lights symbolizes the Jewish belief in the gradual progress of spiritual enlightenment. By starting with one light on the first evening of Hanukah, and increasing the number of lights by one each evening, the Jewish people the whole world over thereby mark the slow but steady victory over the violent storms which have raged against Judaism across the centuries.
As the first day of Hanukah this year falls on Shabbat, the first candle should be lit on Friday prior to the lighting of the Shabbat candles, and the second after the reciting the Havdalah which marks the termination of Shabbat. The same applies to the eighth candle which also falls on Shabbat. The order of lighting the candles are as follows:- The first candle is lit on the right side; the following evening the second candle is placed next to the first candle, the third next to the second and so on until the eighth candle is lit. Each lighting of the candles begins with the new candle that has been added and progresses from left to right. The extra candle serves as a ‘shammash’ and is used for the lighting of the other candles
May the Chanukah lights this year shine over all Israel, and once and for all mark the end of the conflict prevailing here and the whole world over.
Wishing you all a Chag Chanukah sameach
Fraternally,

REPORT: BEIT
ZIMMERMAN CHANUKAH PARTY
On Sunday, 21 st. December, a number of Worthy Brethren and Brethren, and some wives, once again joined the residents at Beit Zimmerman, in Ra’anana, for a most enjoyable and entertaining Chanukah Party.
The residents were provided with refreshments and a small gift, and everyone greatly enjoyed the songs presented by Moshe and Nami Cohen, Doron, Dovie, and Daniel Chitiz, and Yoni Miller.
As usual, the residents were most appreciative of the efforts of those Worthy Brethren and Brethren who take the time to visit them on a regular basis, and keenly look forward to the weekly visits from our Brethren, who usually go to Beit Zimmerman on a Sunday afternoon and serve them tea and biscuits, and also spend some time with them.
