FROM    THE    PRESIDENT’S    PEN …….

Dear Worthy Brethren and Brethren

More than ever, the time is now most appropriate for us to reflect on the highly significant and meaningful Festival of Chanukah, the history of  which we can be so proud,  and from which we have so much to learn.. Chanukah is a festival that has captured the imagination of the Jewish people, and one of its heroes and central figures, Judas Maccabeus has captured the imagination of the world. His figure is enshrined in both music and literature. It is not hard to apprehend why Chanukah is so popular, as it contains the very threads which have been interwoven in the tapestry of Jewish survival. It displays Judaism confronting a superior culture (Hellenism), and emerging from the ordeal triumphant and enriched. It displays an element of heroism without which the physical survival of our nation would not have been possible.

Observances of the festival are  colourful, and it has aptly been called “a festival of faith and light”. It has animated the Jewish home with games that are played in it, and reflects the hope that Judaism will always be provided with the inner resources to resist tyrants with values of life so enhancing as to make its perpetuation through the ages possible. Not only was the miracle of the oil, sufficient for one day, last for eight days, but equally miraculous is the fact that Judaism has survived and withstood the test of time against all odds.

Chanukah carries with it not only a message for us as Jews, but for all humanity. Judas Maccabeus and his handful of men  were ready to live or die nobly, for faith and for freedom. That story has forever filled downtrodden nations and persecuted communities with the conviction that religious liberty and national freedom were invincible.

“Freedoms battle, once begun,

Bequeathed by bleeding sire to son,

Though battled oft, is ever won”

The inspiration of the Maccabean example was never more needed than it is at the present time. We are today faced with the very issues that confronted the Maccabees of old. In fact, the present day totalitarian rulers display an even greater and even more unrelenting zest to crush our faith, freedom and very existence than did Antiochus Epiphanes of ancient times. They maliciously outrage the sanctities of our religion and our right to exist.

Antiochus did not succeed in crushing Judaism nor the spirit of the Jewish people. Neither did Hitler, as well as many other tyrants before them, succeed in their quest to eliminate the Jewish nation from the face of the earth. We will, without doubt, once more survive the adversity of the enemies which confront us today.

Brethren, may the lights of the candles which we light this year reflect upon us  the unprecedented example set by the courage and  the heroism of the Maccabees, and bring with them, once and for all, an end to the violence of those who seek to destroy us. Let us all pray that good will once more triumph over evil.

Chag Chanukah Sameach.

Fraternally,

WORTHY  BROTHER  BENNIE  STEINGOLD.

PRESIDENT.
