FROM
THE
PRESIDENT’S PEN
It is told that the eminent scientist, Professor Huxley, arriving in Dublin to address a learned society, threw himself into a cab and told the driver to ”drive fast”. The driver did so, but a moment later Professor Huxley aroused himself from meditation on the subject of his address and said to the driver: “Do you know where you are going?”
“No sir,” said the driver, “but I am driving fast”
During the year we are so busy with our multifarious activities that we hardly have time to stop and think of the purpose of our activities, but as the High Festivals approach, the time is appropriate to take time off and take stock of ourselves. Even if only for a short while, it is a time when a man can rise above his everyday routine and think about his place in the society in which he lives.
In keeping with this tradition, not only have I taken the time to have a good and honest look at myself, but also made the time to do the same for the Lodge. It struck me most forcibly that our membership exceeds one hundred, yet when it comes to attending a Lodge meeting, our numbers seldom reach thirty. When it comes to a Chaverschaft function, the situation is not very different. Your committee invests much time and effort in arranging functions, not for their own pleasure, but for the benefit of the Brethren of the Lodge, yet their efforts fall far short of their expectations.
A Braai was organized some two months back at which the attendance was 51 people. This sounds fairly impressive, but on analysis the following statistics emerge:-
50% of the attendees were wives
21% were visitors, including Lodge Hasharon
17% were members of the Management committee
12 % were Brethren of the Lodge (6 Brethren)
These figures are most disheartening and I ask myself where are we going wrong. I approached some of the Brethren who I know are able to attend Lodge, yet see fit to absentee themselves. The replies were almost constant; “The meetings are boring.”
With this in mind, the matter was discussed at committee level and it was decided to attempt to upgrade the quality of the meetings by providing more guest speakers of interest. Last month we had Max Grunberg speak on his research into the whereabouts of Raoul Wallenberg which turned out to be such a great success that the place was packed out. This month we will be presenting “HANNAH’S SUITCASE”, under the auspices of WIZO, to which wives and friends are invited, and will replace the Open Lodge Meeting. I once again look forward to having a full house as this is an excellent production.
On the 24th of September we will be holding our
annual “Memorial Meeting” to honor those of our Brethren who have been taken
from our side. This turned out to be such a successful meeting last year that
it was decided to make it an annual event.
So, Brethren, you can clearly see that we are making every effort to
accommodate you, and in return we appeal to you for your cooperation by
honoring us with your presence at Meetings and supporting our functions. This
is the time to reflect and to ask yourself not what the Lodge can do for
you, but what you can do for the Lodge. The future of the Lodge depends on your
support.
I sincerely hope to see you all at “Hannah’s Suitcase” with your wives and friends on the 27th of this month.
Fraternally

GRAND
PRESIDENT’S
REPORT.
The Biennial Conference, which was held on the 19 th. and 20 th. July, 2003, was certainly a great success, and I am sure that all the Delegates from the different Lodges have no doubt reported back to their Lodge Management and Open Lodge Meetings, on the various items that were discussed.

Wor. Bro. Michael Krasner - Grand Projects and Fundraising Officer.
Wor. Bro. Johnny Sonnabend - Grand Trustee.
Wor. Bro. Con Travis - Grand Trustee.
Wor. Bro. Bernard Shull - Grand Trustee.
I certainly feel honoured and privileged to have been elected as Grand President of the Hebrew Order of David International, and I pledge my full effort and support to the Hebrew Order of David International during my term of office.
I have officiated in my first Installation as Grand President. This was Lodge Golan’s Installation, on the weekend of the 25 th. July to 27 th. July. A wonderful delegation of visiting Lodges attended the Installation, including Lodge Jaffa, Lodge Hillel – Menorah, Sir Harry Graumann Lodge, Dr. Herzl Lodge, Lodge Negev, Lodge Jerusalem, The Senate, and members of the Grand Executive. I would like to congratulate and thank the Lodges for sending all these Brethren to the Installation, and this does augur well for Lodge Installations in the future.
The Installation was a great success, from the beginning ( Friday night Shul Service ) to the end ( Sunday afternoon tea.), and I would like to thank all Brethren and wives of Lodge Golan for such a superb weekend.
Worthy Brethren and Brethren, the year 2004 is going to be a special one for the Hebrew Order of David International, as I am sure you all know that we will be celebrating the Hebrew Order of David International Centenary. This is a major milestone in any organization, and we certainly intend celebrating this historic occasion in a way to be remembered for a long time. The Centenary Committee has been working on the celebration, which will be highlighted by a Dinner, which will be held on the 26 th. June, 2004, in Johannesburg, S.A. All Brethren and partners are invited to attend this Dinner, at a cost of R 175 – 00 per head. The booking will be done on a “ first come, first serve ” basis, so book early. Tickets can be obtained at the H.O.D. offices.
The Grand Executive have, in order to raise funds for the Centenary celebrations, organized a competition. This is in the form of a return ticket to LE Coco Beach Hotel in Mauritius for 7 nights with all accommodation included. Tickets are on sale at R 100 – 00 each. I urge Brethren to help sell tickets, as this can be a great help towards financing the Centenary celebrations. Tickets can be obtained at the Hebrew Order of David International offices.
GRAND
PRESIDENT’S
REPORT, continued:
Worthy Brethren and Brethren, I must mention that my main goal during my term of office is certainly the most important one, i.e. the increase of membership. A strong membership is vital for our existence, as it can allow us to continue to do the good work we have done for the past 99 years. I appeal to each and every Brother to make a concerted effort to help achieve this goal, and trust that your commitment to the Order will grow from strength to strength.
Thank you.
Yours fraternally,
WOR.
BRO. MARC GOLDBERG.
GRAND
PRESIDENT.

APPEAL FOR
ASSISTANCE - BET AVOT
ZIMERMAN:
BET AVOT ZIMERMAN, Ra’anana, was founded in 1964 as a Home for the elderly. Many of the residents are Holocaust Survivors, while others are sent by the Department of Welfare. The Home is run by a “ Public Trust ”, whose members are volunteers for the non-profit organization.
BET AVOT ZIMERMAN is one of Lodge Moledet’s ongoing projects. The residents are visited regularly every Sunday afternoon, and before Channukah and Purim, a party, and special entertainment is organized for the residents, and each one is presented with a small gift.
The BET AVOT recently received an adjoining lot from the Ra’anana Municipality, which will enable them to enlarge the gardens and parking area. However, their most urgent requirement is the installation of air-conditioning units for the comfort of the residents, and the BET AVOT Manager, Mr. Michael Lipsky, has appealed to us as a Lodge, or in our individual capacities, to assist in raising the necessary finance.
Should any Worthy Brother or Brother be able to help, please contact our Worthy Brother Secretary, Worthy Brother David Gelfand ( Phone: (H) 09 – 749 3467. ), for further details.
