ADD    DIGNITY    TO    THE     MEETING     BY     COMING     TO    LODGE     DRESSED    IN     A

WHITE     SHIRT     AND    DARK     TROUSERS.

FROM   THE    PRESIDENT’S    PEN

Dear Worthy Brethren and Brethren,

It is not by chance that the Hebrew Order of David has adopted the principle of “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” According to Rabbi Akiva the most comprehensive precept in the Torah is “You shall love thy neighbor as thyself.”

True love is tested by its sincerity. It will not hesitate to express blame or censure, and at the same time will also accept criticism. Reprove a wise man and he will love you; loving friendship will overlook faults. Hatred stirs up strife whereas love covers all offences. He who forgives an offence truly seeks love. Just as true friendship is recommended, so equally false friendship is condemned.

Loving your neighbor as yourself simply means that you should honor him with the utmost sincerity as you yourself would like to be honored. Do not harbor hatred, even in your heart. The only one that suffers if you bear a grudge against someone is you yourself, as the one against whom you bear a grudge may be totally unaware of your feelings towards him.  If, for whatever reason you may have been wronged, you should confront the wrongdoer with dignity, and if he is sorry and asks your forgiveness, don’t be relentless, but forgive him.

Sincerity is of the utmost importance in self-criticism, for without it, you will find little to criticize within yourself. Self love excites in a man so strong a feeling of self importance that he becomes unaware of his own shortcomings while he sees those of his neighbor quite clearly. In exercising self-criticism, one should endeavor to eliminate, or at least reduce to a minimum, this element of self love, and scrutinize ourselves in the same way that we would others.

The Vilna Gaon, in a letter to his family wrote: “Treat all men with respect and amiability. Bring happiness to one another by kindly social relations. Let there be no dissention of any kind, but let love and forgiveness reign. Forgive one another and live in amity for the sake of G-d.

Brethren, how many of us are guilty of  violation of the above concepts? I include myself amongst the guilty and undertake, as I propose that we all do, to retake stock of ourselves. Let us  revise our values, and practice the basic principal of “Love thy neighbor as yourself” as required by your undertaking as a member of the Order in the true sense for which these wise words were intended.

I wish to remind you all that our Open Lodge Meeting will take place on the 30 th of  this month, at the usual venue. The format of the Meeting has been changed slightly, in that we will be having our Festive Board before the Meeting, in order to accommodate the wives. We will be addressed by Brother Max Grunberg, who will be speaking on “The Search for Raoul Wallenberg”, for which he was awarded the “Polar Star Medal” on behalf of the King of Sweden. Also, the time has been changed from 8:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for practical purposes.

Hoping to see you all there with your wives.

Fraternally

WORTHY  BROTHER  BENNIE  STEINGOLD.

President.
