This is my first message as President for a second term, following the Installation which took place on the 30th March, under the direction of our Worthy Brother Grand President. I am happy to report that every aspect of the festivities was a great success. A welcoming reception for the Brethren of the three Lodges, and their wives, at which light refreshments were provided, was immediately followed by the Installation Ceremony, for Worthy Brethren and Brethren only.
The Installation Ceremony was presided over by the Worthy Brother Grand President, ably assisted by a team of Brethren from Lodge Hasharon , and our own Lodge. Worthy Brother Archie Poliak was honoured by being given the position of Deputy Grand President, Worthy Brother Morris Maze acted as the Grand Master of Ceremonies and Worthy Brother Claude Lavenski as Grand Preceptor. I take this opportunity of congratulating these three Worthy Brethren, as well as all others who participated, on the most professional way in which they executed their duties. Each and every one of them truly excelled themselves.
While the ceremony was in progress, the ladies were addressed by Mrs.Estelle Slevin, who is a Speech and Hearing Therapist and spoke on the problems affecting children who suffer from these maladies as well as showing a video. Her talk was exceptionally well received and thoroughly enjoyed by all who were fortunate enough to hear her. The evening culminated with a scrumptious Banquet which was the highlight of the evening.
As we are about to celebrate the festival of Pesach, I cannot let the opportunity pass without a few words about the Chag. I particularly wish to relate to the Korban Pesach, the significance of which so closely ties in with the principles of our Order. Firstly, it must be roasted over a fire and one is not permitted to break any of the bones in order to eat of the marrow within them. These special laws are a sign of unity and togetherness as roasting solidifies a food while cooking breaks it apart.
The only way to truly enjoy true freedom is to stand together and become as one. There is no greater strength than when we Jews are united as one people. Rashi explains that only when there is peace and harmony amongst us does Hashem reign over us. There is no greater strength than the power of Achdut – unity, and we are made aware of this when we read in the Hagada that the Seder table includes all four sons, even the wicked one.
Unfortunately we have been fragmented over the years, and trod on each other in the struggle for money, power and other petty trivialities. The hatred and strife between different groups of Jews has existed for thousands of years. How many more years of Galut must we suffer before we come to our senses and realize that the basis of the entire Torah lies in “V’havtecha l’reiacha k’mocha” - “Love thy Neighbour as Yourself”. We must realize that Jewish unity is the basis of survival.
While we must admonish the sinful, it must be done with great love rather than in hate. Words of hate bounce right back at oneself while words of love enter the other person’s heart. If we want our words to be listened to, lets try saying them with heart rather than with hate, with love rather than with rage.
Only by joining together and holding each other’s hand, and living in peace and harmony can we merit that Hashem extradite us from this long, dark and bitter Galut. May it be sooner than later.
Wishing you all a happy and kosher Chag Pesach Sameach.
Fraternally,
WORTHY BROTHER BENNIE
STEINGOLD.
PRESIDENT.

By our Chaplain, Worthy Brother CYRIL FINE.
The festival of Pesach, as we are all aware, celebrates perhaps the greatest event in our history when we were freed from slavery, taken out of Egypt and formed into a nation, and is the prelude to the giving of the Torah. When one tries to put this into perspective, one has to imagine what the world was like in that primitive age nearly 4,000 years ago. Consider that it took the civilized world until the 19th century to free slaves and, nevertheless, one still finds instances of slavery or white slavery in our present day and even in “progressive” societies. To our shame Israel, too, is not completely innocent in this regard.
Imagine a whole nation being freed from slavery during that period – this was a miracle in itself and could only have come about due to so many miraculous events that G-d had orchestrated. It was unheard of in those days as was the fact that a whole nation upped and left. The splitting of the Red Sea and the drowning of the whole mighty Egyptian army must have created consternation, awe and disbelief in the whole world. There had never been a precedent for the freeing of slaves even on an individual basis.
This great event formed us into a nation and we remember this twice daily in the Shema as well as in the Shabbat Kiddush and in the prayers of Shabbat. If so, why do we need to have a special festival to commemorate the event as well? Is it to remind us? Surely mentioning it so many times during the whole year is sufficient.
Peasach is the time not only to remember, but to TELL your children about this great event. "ĺäâăăú ěáđę áéĺí ääĺŕ" From this comes the HAGADDAH – that very interesting booklet which has been developed over the years as a basis to tell, discuss and to provoke questions from your children or other participants at the Seder. The Hagaddah is meant to be the basis and it is purposely designed to challenge us to interpret the situations and so provke a remark or argument and so we can shed further light on this earth-shattering event and to shower praise and thanks to the Allmighty for the many miracles that He wielded to enable the success of our Exodus.
Yes, one of the most important mitzvoth of Pesach is to TELL the story, to teach your children (and grand-children) and in this regard, as we say in the Hagaddah – the more we talk about it the more praiseworthy it is.
The Hagaddah talks about the four types of children – the wise, the wicked, the simple and the one who is unable to answer. I would venture to suggest that there are, perhaps, other categories as well. For example the Torah in one place quotes “when your son says what is this service to you’. While in another place it is written “when your son asks you” The difference between “saying” and “asking” is great. A child who says has already got fixed ideas and it will be extremely difficult to reason with him or to persuade him to change his mind. Whereas the one who asks comes without preconceived views and is therefore open to accept a logical and reasonable explanation. From this we learn that one should begin educating our children at a young age so that they will be equipped with the knowledge of their own heritage before being exposed to other ideas. Well do I remember a friend of mine in my youth in South Africa who had never learnt a chapter of Chumash with Rashi in his life but started to read Bible Critics. In no time he became an agnostic as he did not know his own culture and heritage.

REFLECTIONS ON CHAG HAPESACH,
continued:
In the Hagaddah we are told that the best way to teach something is when you have the symbols before you. One should tell the story when you have all the symbols of Pesach before you – PESACH, MATZO AND MARROR. Thus the Seder night is undoubtedly the best time to tell the story of our beginnings as a nation. This is the time to imbue your children and grand-children with the understanding and love for our Heritage.
Make a little effort and study the Hagaddah well before the Seder – you will find it fascinating and you will be surprised to discover hidden meanings and interpretations which have never occurred to you before. You yourself will be excited by it and your enthusiasm will then be transmitted more effectively and sincerely to your kith and kin and will be an everlasting legacy for them.
I
wish all Brethren, Worthy Brethren, their wives and families a Happy and Kosher
Pesach.
