FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN ……
The Jewish holiday of Purim starts on Monday evening. Superficially it may seem like Halloween. There are masks and costumes, and there are tricks and treats. But, beyond the disguises, there are profound lessons about geopolitics, anti-Semitism, and Jewish justice.
The story is about a powerful tyrannical politician named Haman, in a place that may or may not have been Iraq. He plotted to kill all the Kingdom’s Jews until he was foiled by a Jewish woman named Esther, who, together with her uncle, Mordechai, turned the tables on the anti-Semitic minister, who ended up by hanging from a tree with his sons and supporters.
In 1991 the first Gulf War ended on Purim. Israeli schoolchildren exchanged their gas masks for holiday masks. Then, the man who launched 39 scuds against the Israeli civilian population, was allowed to live another twelve years along with his sons and the rest of his brutal regime, continuing to fool most of the gullible world.
Now, round two seems poised to begin, once again on and around Purim. Lo and behold, the accusation is raised in Washington, and elsewhere, that the Jews are behind the drive to dispose of Saddam Hussein. It now seems that Saddam Hussein may be preparing a Purim surprise of his own, moving scuds into Western Iraq so that they can reach Israel. You would think that if U.S. defense officials could track illegal missiles, they could also produce the evidence to convince wavering nations that Iraq has offensive weapons capable of bearing chemical and biological warheads. On the other hand, the U.S. may decide not to wait around to test Iraq’s first strike capabilities..
Sure, it may play havoc with our kid’s masks and costumes, and the Purim tradition of bringing baskets of fruits and food to friends and to the needy. But, I have no doubt, and all the confidence, that Israel is capable of handling and overcoming the situation. Let us all pray and look forward to a happy and peaceful Purim.
I would also again like to remind Brethren that our Annual Combined Installation takes place on the 30th of March, which replaces our monthly Open Lodge Meeting, and I urge all Brethren to make an effort to attend this most important function, which is the highlight of our year. The Grand President will be in attendance, and we should honour him by turning out in force by supporting this function, which is especially significant this year as this is the twenty fifth year of the establishment of our beloved Lodge Moledet.
Once again, I take the opportunity of wishing all Brethren, and Clal Yisrael, a Chag Purim Sameach.
Fraternally
WORTHY BROTHER BENNIE STEINGOLD.
PRESIDENT.
