REPORT: INTER – LODGE QUIZ:

As advertised in our last Newsletter, the Inter – Lodge Quiz, held on the 19 th. December, at Beit Issie

Shapiro, was a resounding “ Evening to remember ”. The competition was very keen, and Lodge Lishkat

Hasharon ran out the winners for 2002.

enjoyable and entertaining evening.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN:

Dear Worthy Brethren and Brethren ,

Why do we pray for a life of riches and honour in our Rosh Chodesh blessings? Does it really matter so much whether or not someone has wealth? Many of us who are not so well endowed financially ask this question every month when we say the blessing for the New Moon. We wonder if our lack of affluence means that G-d has rejected our plea for chayim shel osher – a life of riches, or is there something wrong with ourselves that we do not succeed in making money. Are we failures or nobodies?

It more than likely depends on what the prayer means by riches. Perhaps it is thinking of the passage in Pirkei Avoth which says “He is rich who is satisfied with his own lot.” In other words, you can be rich in ways other than with money. You are rich if you have a stable personality, are at ease with yourself, have no major neuroses, and can wake up every morning and say Baruch HaShem.

A shining example of this philosophy comes from Rechov HaSabalim, the street of the porters, near the markets in Jerusalem where there is a porter who gaily goes around carrying his load singing Ana Hashem – I am happy! Baruch HaShem – I am rich. When asked what he means, he promptly explained: “The word for rich is Ashir. From the letters of the word, the Aleph stands for Aynayim – eyes, the Shin for Shinayim – teeth, the Yod for Yadayim – hands and the Raiz for Raglayim – legs. I am both happy and rich because I have my eyes, my teeth, my hands and my legs. That makes me healthy which means that I am rich.

But, does one not need money in addition? Indeed, you do. But, as the bible recognised all those centuries ago, it has no worth if it was gained dishonestly or has become an obsession, nor if you use it to bully or to bribe someone in order to derive a benefit therefrom. Disraeli once said “Great wealth is a great blessing to him who knows what to do with it”. According to the Talmud, Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi, compiler of the Mishna, used to honour rich people because he knew that the rich were useful to society, and could give charity to support the community.

The Hebrew word for charity is “Tsedaka” – righteousness. When we help the poor and needy, we are performing acts of righteousness and mercy. Charity can take many forms: it includes giving and lending to the poor and supporting organisations which provide for their needs. The highest form of charity is that given secretly and with good grace.

Unfortunately, here in Israel, we, the H.O.D., are governed by the laws of the Amuta which does not permit us to provide any financial assistance to a Brother, and as during the past year we raised hardly any funds whatsoever, as our main fund raising project of Rabbi Fogel’s book has not yet proved to be viable, we have eroded some of our reserves.. We are now approaching a new year with a new committee and I make an urgent appeal to any Brother who is able to make himself available to do so, to come forward and assist in the mitzva of “Tsedaka” by serving on a fund raising sub-committee so that we may fulfil our obligation to those of our fellow citizens who are truly in need.

Our Open Lodge meeting for January will be held as usual on the last Wednesday of the month, namely the 29^th January, but I ask you please to take note of the date for the February meeting, which is our Annual General Meeting, at which the Officers for the incoming year will be elected. Please make every effort to attend both of these meetings as there are important matters to be discussed, including arrangements for the impending Installation which require approval from Open Lodge.

REPORT: CHANNUKAH PARTY AT BEIT ZIMMERMAN:

A most enjoyable Channukah Party was held for the elderly residents at Beit Zimmerman , in Ra’anana.

Lodge Moledet sincerely thanks Mrs. Gertrude Franco ( Piano), and Worthy Brother Clive Chitiz and his children ( Choir and singing.), for providing the entertainment , and also Mrs. Bella Lipman , for all her hard work in wrapping the gifts that were given to the residents.

A happy time was had by all , and everyone had a good tuck in to the refreshments provided .

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO STAND FOR OFFICE ?

The following information is provided as a reminder to those Worthy Brethren and Brethren who are interested in putting their names forward for Nomination and Election to Office.

* A Brother must be in possession of the First Degree , i.e. He must have completed the

Lighting of his Seven Candles.

* A Brother must be in Good Standing , i.e. He must be up to date with his Annual Sub -

scriptions , or have made suitable arrangements with the Worthy Brother Treasurer for the

settlement of his Dues.

* Should any Worthy Brother or Brother want to Stand for Office , but not be able to attend

the Election Meeting , he must indicate his willingness to Stand for Office , IN WRITING ,

stating which position / s he is prepared to Stand for. This written indication is to be in the

hands of the Worthy Brother Secretary before the start of the Election Meeting.
